Recognizing Manipulation

Triangulation: The Divide and Conquer Manipulation Tactic

By Dr. Johnathan Hines11 min read

Triangulation occurs when someone creates or manipulates communication between two parties, acting as the messenger, information filter, or pot stirrer. It is an indirect communication strategy that gives the manipulator maximum control with minimum accountability.

How Triangulation Works

Signs of Triangulation

Hearing secondhand what someone "said about you." Being told "everyone feels this way" without specifics. Finding yourself in conflicts with people you barely interact with. Noticing one person is always in the middle of group conflicts. Feeling the need to defend yourself against vague accusations.

Pastor Robert's Church Triangulation Story

"When I took over as senior pastor, most of the church welcomed me, except Deacon Harold. He never directly opposed me, which would have been easier to address. Instead, he became the church's unofficial 'communication hub.'

After each board meeting, Harold would call members with his 'concerns' about my leadership. To young families: 'The pastor wants to cut children's ministry funding.' To seniors: 'He is ignoring the needs of our founding members.' To me: 'People are worried about your direction, but I am defending you.'

None of these claims were true, but Harold created a perception that the church was divided over my leadership. When confronted, he would say, 'I am just telling you what people are saying,' without ever identifying specific sources."

How to Counter Triangulation

Implement direct communication: "I would prefer to hear this directly from them."

Verify information: "I will check with them about this."

Refuse to be triangulated: "This sounds like something you should discuss with them, not me."

Create transparency: Group meetings instead of private one on ones when tensions exist.

Name the pattern: "I have noticed you often tell me what others think instead of speaking for yourself."

Remember: Information control is power. By insisting on direct communication, you remove the triangulator's primary weapon.
