The church should be a safe haven, but it is often ground zero for Jezebel's operations. Why? Because controlling the spiritual atmosphere gives this spirit tremendous power over people's lives.
Signs of Jezebel in Church Settings
Authority Subversion
Undermining leadership while maintaining a "supportive" facade. Creating shadow authority structures by being the "real" leader behind the scenes. Using "God told me" statements to override established leadership.
Division Creation
Stirring up doctrinal disputes over non essential matters. Whisper campaigns against leadership or other members. Creating "special" groups that foster elitism and division.
Spiritual Manipulation
Using scripture selectively as a weapon. Claiming special revelation or insight to control others. Manufacturing spiritual crises to maintain relevance and control.
False Humility and Service
Serving visibly to gain influence, not out of genuine love. Using service as leverage to control decisions. Becoming "indispensable" so they cannot be challenged.
Pastor David's Elder Board Nightmare
Pastor David came to me after resigning from a church he had planted and led for twelve years. He was dealing with depression, panic attacks, and a crisis of calling so severe he was not sure he would ever preach again.
"I still do not fully understand what happened," he told me. "One day I was leading a thriving church. The next, I was the villain in a story I did not recognize."
What happened was a textbook Jezebel operation, executed by his own elder board.
It started when David hired a young associate pastor named Kevin who quickly became popular with certain influential families. Kevin was gifted, charismatic, and ambitious, though David did not recognize the ambition at first.
Kevin began having private meetings with three of the five elders. These meetings were framed as "prayer times" and "leadership development." David was actually glad Kevin was building relationships with church leadership.
What David did not know was that Kevin was systematically redefining David's leadership in those meetings. He would share "concerns" about David that were actually distortions. He would mention that David seemed "tired" or "disconnected." He would wonder aloud if the church had outgrown David's capabilities.
The Dark Room was being built around Pastor David, and he did not even know it.
Protecting Your Church
Churches can protect themselves through clear authority structures with accountability, direct communication policies that prevent triangulation, leadership development that includes character assessment, and healthy conflict resolution processes that bring issues into the light.
The Jezebel spirit thrives in darkness and ambiguity. Create structures that require transparency and accountability.
