Recovery and Restoration

Protecting Your Church from the Jezebel Spirit: A Pastor's Guide

By Dr. Johnathan Hines14 min read

This chapter is specifically for pastors and church leaders. The Jezebel spirit has destroyed countless churches and ministries. But it does not have to destroy yours.

Why Churches Are Vulnerable

Churches present unique vulnerabilities to Jezebel influence. Emphasis on grace and forgiveness can be exploited. Authority structures may lack accountability. Spiritual language provides camouflage for manipulation. "Touch not the Lord's anointed" mentality protects predators. Desire for unity discourages confrontation.

Understanding these vulnerabilities helps you shore them up before Jezebel finds them.

Prevention Strategies

Clear Authority Structures with Accountability

Jezebel thrives in ambiguous authority situations. Create clear lines of authority AND clear accountability for everyone, including senior leadership. No one should be above scrutiny.

Direct Communication Policies

Implement policies that require direct communication. Issues must be addressed directly with the person involved before being brought to leadership. This prevents triangulation and gossip campaigns.

Leadership Development That Includes Character Assessment

Do not just assess gifts. Assess character. Look for signs of manipulation, control issues, and unwillingness to submit to authority before placing people in leadership. Slow down the promotion pipeline.

Healthy Conflict Resolution Processes

Create structures for bringing conflict into the light. Matthew 18 provides a framework. When issues are addressed openly and documented, manipulation becomes much harder.

Detection: Warning Signs in Church Members

Watch for these patterns:

Intervention: What to Do When You Identify Jezebel

Document: Keep records of specific incidents, not just general impressions.

Consult: Bring in trusted outside perspectives before acting.

Confront Directly: Matthew 18 applies. Go directly to the person with specific concerns.

Watch the Response: Genuine Christians respond to correction with humility. Jezebel influenced individuals attack, deflect, or play victim.

Protect the Flock: If manipulation continues, you have a responsibility to protect the congregation, even if it means removing someone from leadership or membership.

Supporting Victims Within Your Church

When you identify victims of Jezebel manipulation within your congregation, validate their experience without minimizing it. Connect them with appropriate resources. Do not pressure premature reconciliation. Understand that healing takes time. Be prepared for the manipulator to target you next.

Your role as a shepherd includes protecting sheep from wolves, even wolves in sheep's clothing.
